Blowout by rachel maddow5/27/2023 ![]() Blowout is informative and fast-paced, even cynical and sarcastic at times. What could have been a professorial and overly detailed book is lifted by Maddow’s playfully saucy tone of reporting, familiar to viewers of her nightly show. Maddow covers a wide variety of topics to make her case, such as the industry’s use of fracking, the Sochi Olympics, the Russian annexation of Crimea and interference in the 2016 elections, and the British Petroleum oil spill and corruption in Equatorial Guinea, and she manages to tie it all together seamlessly. She argues that the fossil fuel industry’s thirst for profits can subvert moral standards, proper stewardship of the earth’s resources, and good governance, both in the United States and abroad. ![]() But Rachel Maddow, host of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, author of The New York Times best seller Drift: The Unmooring of Military Power, and part-time Provincetown resident, has written a page-turner on those very subjects - Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Most Destructive Industry on Earth, published by Crown this month. ![]() (Photo courtesy Penguin Random House)Ī book on the oil and gas industry, Russia, and government corruption? Sounds a bit daunting. Blowout author Rachel Maddow deconstructs the mix of politics, capitalism and unrestrained greed that has inevitably led to the climate change crisis and threatens democracy. ![]()

Only in the final chapter does Cal, the narrator, hear from her grandmother the deathbed confession of incest that gave Cal the license to investigate every detail of her ancestry in order to tell the story of her hermaphroditic existence. ![]() A third of the book is devoted to the immigration of her grandparents and all the historical factors that came into play. The book wrestles with one fundamental question of its protagonist Cal Stephanides: how did I become a hermaphrodite? The question can only be answered in the character’s ancestry. With all that has been written about Middlesex and all its praise, allow me to instead focus on this singular point of genius in its authorship. What I did not see coming was the transformative narrative voice that made the read so unforgettable. ![]() In googling the book pre-read, I expected to read most for the mythical references and the radical gender-bending narrative - it is told through the eyes of a hermaphrodite.
